My thoughts on the "Slaying the Monsters"

The part of the "Slaying the Monsters" was something else. It had action scenes, philosophy, happiness, sadness, hope, and acts of bravery all in one. The thing that stuck out to me the most was role of the sun. At times he was seen as a good guy but in other occassions he was the bad guy. For instance, he would try to play tricks on his children and would only help them if he got something in return. However, at the same he did help them on killing off the monsters. My favorite character was the wind because he would give the boys advice when they were in tight spots and would go out his way to make sure that the boys were safe even though there was nothing in it for him. In addition, I love the stories that the monsters played because they explained why creatures behave the way they do or why the earth does the crazy things it does such as having harsh winters and giving humans old-age. It was fascinating how the monsters played a huge role of why things are the way they are even though at first they were villains. Laslty, what I got out of the story is that everyone can be forgiven and that sometimes the best thing to do is to leave things the way they are.

  1. I agree with your view of the sun. I he was good at times and others he was the bad guy. I'm confused when you say that he helped the twins kill the monsters. I thought he told them to go to their mother Changing Woman, and that she know what to do. I thought that she was the one who ended up killing the monsters. I guess the sun did direct them where to go though.

  2. This story was interesting however I believe that the sun was not as good of a character as you described him. He first of all left his children alone for all of their adolescence and then made them struggle to get back to him. His Two sons had to overcome difficult task and face evil monsters just to meet their father. And also at the beginning of the story the sun didn't win over the mother. Or even asked her if she would bare his children. He in a sense took advantage of her and then left her to fend for herself. This is more apparent as the story come to an end. The mother is still mad with the sun and does not even wish to help her children out because of her anger. Se is thankfully a very peaceful person and forgave the sun and helped her sons. The women (the mother and the spider women" of this story are the only "good" characters. Even though at the end of the story the mother was portrayed as stubborn and materialistic.
